Geordie is one lucky Pooch!

Hearing about the NMHP Shelter Open House, which was held in early December, Suzanne & Steve went to the Humane Society to drop off donations of toys and food, and to spread some holiday cheer to all the animals.

A week later they decided they had plenty of room in their home (and hearts) for a dog.  So, they went back to the Humane Society and adopted Geordie! And, Geordie couldn't be happier and more grateful...he had been waiting for an entire year for people just like Suzanne and Steve to take him home!

Metro-wide Shelter Open House
A jolly good time was had by all!

No More Homeless Pets in Kansas City organized the first Metro-Wide Shelter Open House on Saturday, December 11, 2004.

24 animal shelters, humane societies, animal control offices and rescues participated around the city. Each location had different special events for visitors and adopters such as pictures of Santa and their pets, raffles and drawings, refreshments and bake sales.

138 pets were adopted! Each shelter reported the approximate number of visitors for a total of just over 1100 visitors. People were able to visit with all the beautiful animals in need of homes, learn about the benefits of spaying and neutering to reduce the homeless animal population, and share goodwill for the animals and their caretakers.

There were several holiday visitors to the Open Houses that had a jolly good time!

  • One woman, dropping off dog food for at Lee’s Summit Animal Control Shelter, became the lucky winner of the drawing for a digital camera.

  • Another holiday merry maker, visited the The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, brought in treats for the dogs and “wish list” goodies. Having taken a tour, she could have easily taken home a new pet for her daughter, but already having several pets, she decided to bring her daughter in so she could pick out a dog for their “Sponsor a Pet” program. How especially sweet that a mother would make a special trip to let her daughter pick out a dog that can bark about the fact “I have a best friend.”

  • State Line Animal Hospital received a big parcel of toys, from one of their best clients, for all their shelter animals which made their day merry.

  • Animal Haven raised $13,000 in one day for their building fund and received 2 cargo vans full of food, treats and pet supplies. Ho Ho Ho! That’s a lot of dough!

The winners of the door-prize drawing enjoyed helping the animals as much as winning the prizes! And, No More Homeless Pets in Kansas City is very grateful for the prizes donated for the drawing.

  • A Kodak Digital Camera
  • Quilted Outerwear Vest from PinStripes Menswear on the Plaza
  • Adjustable Office Chair & Paper from KC Business Supply
  • $25.00 Costco Gift Card was donated by the Overland Park Costco
  • 2 Pet Memorial Videos from A to Z Video
  • 8 Week Dog Obedience Class from The Pet Connection.

The purpose of NMHP in KC is to end pet overpopulation by promoting spay/neuter, adoptions and humane treatment of animals. Promoting cooperative efforts and events is our mission. Kansas City has exceptional animal welfare groups that are now working together more than ever thanks to the efforts of No More Homeless Pets in Kansas City. With the encouragement and help of Best Friends Animal Society, NMHP in KC was able to make the premiere of the Metro-Wide Shelter Open House Day a wonderful example of animal lovers working together to help the homeless animals in Kansas City.

Thanks to all the visitors who came and showed support for our hard-working participating shelters and rescue groups.

How Much is that Doggie in the Window?

Did you know that approximately 6000 puppies are shipped out of Missouri weekly destined for pet shops and cages around the nation and the world? That's about 300,000 puppies per year making it a $4 billion Missouri industry!

Most of these doggies are mass-bred in a "puppy mill" where the dogs are kept in deplorable conditions. Many of these animals end up with chronic health and behavioral problems, have questionable "papers" or lineage, and carry a hefty price tag!

Please, check out your dog breeder thoroughly before you buy!

A better option? Yes, OPT to ADOPT a shelter/rescue pet! On the average 30% of the dogs in shelters are pure breed dogs. Breed mix dogs are also plentiful at shelters and are not as likely to suffer pure breed maladies.
